Environmental covenant
On 2 June 1995 an environmental covenant was signed between authorities and NOGEPA. The covenant formally runs until the end of 2010 comprises a declaration of intent on environmental themes as well as an integrated environmental target.
Every four years each participating company prepares an environmental plan. These describe what efforts and initiatives each company will make to contribute to achieving the covenant’s objectives. Reporting on what results are actually achieved takes place annually. In 2010 participating companies will publish the results of the fourth series of company environmental plans.
The results of the environmental covenant of all industries are contained in the report "Milieu en industrie: Een klus geklaard" (Dutch).
Objectives
Most objectives of the covenant have already been successfully achieved as is clear from the 2007 report from FO-Industrie (NL).
Consultation platform Oil and gas
On 27 October 2010 the Consultation Platform Oil and Gas started its activities. In this platform, authorities and the oil and gas industry cooperate in the field of the protection of the environment. The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment (Rijkswaterstaat) and the State Supervision of Mines participate on behalf of the government.
Long term agreements (MJA-3)
The long term energy efficiency agreement (MJA3) is an agreement between government and companies on energy efficiency improvement. In MJA-3 it has been agreed that companies will seek to annually improve their energy efficiency by 2% so that by 2020 a 30% improvement will have been achieved.
For this companies prepare an energy efficiency plan and annually report on their measures taken and real achievements. The oil and gas industry has performed well in the area of energy efficiency. Especially in the period 1998-2005 many measures were introduced and improvements achieved. As a result, energy efficiency improvement went much further than the original objectives.
